Bringing up their 5 year old boy, Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini), the war continues without them noticing until one fateful day when the Germans arrest Guido and his son at the uncle's house during preparation for Giosué's birthday party, and transfer them to a concentration camp. Charming her with 'Buongiorno, Principessa!', getting the timing perfect every time, and whisking her away on a green horse (don't ask!) ensures they soon live together happily in Guido's uncle, Eliseo Orefice's (Giustino Durano), house.

Set in late 1930s, Arezzo, Italy, Jewish waiter Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni) uses cunning wit to win over an Italian schoolteacher, Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), who's set to marry another man.

The synopsis below may give away important plot points. Guido's primary goal is to keep Giosué safe at all cost, while he tries to figure out a way to get his family out of the camp and keep the Germans at bay from learning what he is doing with Giosué. The first to reach 1,000 points wins the prize of a real tank. To protect Giosué from the horror of what is happening to them, Guido tells him that they are playing a game, certain actions which garner points, other actions which take points away or disqualify one from the game. Wanting to be with her family, Dora insists she be taken too, but she is housed in the women's side of the camp. Since they are Jewish, the Germans take away Guido, Eliseo and Giosué to a labor camp. On Giosué's fifth birthday, World War II is in full force. They get married and have a son they name Giosué. Despite she already being in a relationship with another man, Guido ultimately sweeps her off her feet. In town, he meets a school teacher named Dora, who he calls Princess and who comes from a wealthy Italian family. In the meantime, he will work as a waiter at the hotel restaurant where his Uncle Eliseo is the maître d'. Overall, a must watch and roll on the next one Sekhar Kammula.In 1939, Jewish-Italian Guido Orefice comes into Arezzo, Italy, ultimately to open a book store. On that note the movie reminded me of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Hum Hindustani'.

Additonally one or two sub-plots should have been edited out as it gives an impression of TV series ie. The only short-coming is the length which makes the movie sag in the latter half. Just like in 'Happy Days' major portions of the plot seem autobiographical, which makes the audience have an instant connect. DOP has done a great job which gives you the feel of the environment. Shriya Saran as always does 'stop the press' when she appears in the frame. Its good to see Amla & Anjala Zaveri after a long time. The sub-plots fit like glove in a hand into the main storyline.

The screenplay is fluid and the movie engrosses you right from the word go. The actor have given their best, or should we say the talented director has helped to realise their true potential. As always all the characters are fleshed out well, especially female (Sekhar Kammula's forte). The director has demonstrated sensitivity which gets reflected in every character including the pet dog. In the past he has demonstrated his craft and story-telling skills. Outing from Sekhar Kammula is anticipated with bated breath.
